The Overview
The outdoor floor that doesn’t yellow, chip, or turn into an ice rink.
Carolina weather is unforgiving on a coating. July hits the slab at 140 degrees of direct-sun surface temperature. January drives freeze-thaw cycles that pop cheap sealers off concrete like paint off old trim. UV bakes any non-aliphatic resin yellow inside a season. Pool chlorine and spa salt strip coatings that weren’t rated for chemical exposure. And every outdoor surface needs enough texture to walk on wet, without turning into sandpaper underfoot.
The polyaspartic systems Robert installs outdoors are formulated specifically for these conditions. The resin chemistry is aliphatic — meaning UV-stable, not a clear coat that yellows. The topcoat includes a broadcast of anti-slip aggregate sized for barefoot comfort: enough grip for a wet pool deck, soft enough not to scrape feet. The base is pigmented in earth-tone palettes designed to read beautifully against outdoor light rather than indoor showroom conditions.
Freeze-thaw performance is where outdoor coatings live or die. The substrate moves with temperature — concrete expands and contracts all year. A coating that’s too rigid cracks with the slab. The polyaspartic formulation we use has controlled flex, stays bonded through Charlotte’s seasonal swings, and doesn’t delaminate at the saw cuts. Ten-year real-world performance is the baseline. Book a patio walk and we’ll pull moisture readings and specify the right system.
What’s Included
Outdoor-specific spec — different from any garage floor.
01 · Prep
Diamond Grind + Rebar Check
Mechanical grind to open the slab profile. Any exposed rebar or structural cracks documented and repaired before primer.
02 · Repair
Control-Joint Honor
Existing control joints are preserved, not coated over. Flexible polyurethane sealant reinstalled before topcoat so the slab can move without cracking the finish.
03 · Primer
Moisture-Rated Outdoor Base
Vapor-permeable primer rated for exterior slabs. Different chemistry than indoor work — the slab needs to breathe up, not trap moisture.
04 · Color
Earth-Tone Pigmented Coat
Color palette built for outdoor light — warm stone tones, weathered concrete, river-rock blends. Flake broadcast optional for premium pool-deck looks.
05 · Anti-Slip
Broadcast Aggregate
Aluminum-oxide or silica broadcast sized for barefoot comfort. Slip-rated for wet environments per ANSI B101.3 safe threshold.
06 · Topcoat
Aliphatic UV-Stable Polyaspartic
Two-coat polyaspartic formulated for UV exposure. Non-yellowing, chemical resistant for pool chlorine and grill grease, rated for 10+ year exterior service life.
How It Goes Down
Weather-window install. Sealed before the first storm.
Walk & Weather Window
Robert walks the deck or patio, measures linear footage of control joints, reviews drainage, pulls moisture readings. Install scheduled inside a 48-hour dry window — Carolina humidity dictates timing more than temperature.
Prep & Joint Detail
Diamond grind opens the slab. Existing control joints are cleaned out, sealed with polyurethane. Cracks patched with flexible polyurea that matches slab movement.
Color & Anti-Slip
Pigmented base coat rolled. While wet, anti-slip aggregate is broadcast across the surface to rejection. Overnight cure — loose aggregate recovered and swept flat the next morning.
Topcoat & Cure
Polyaspartic topcoat rolled and back-rolled for even film. UV-rated, barefoot-safe inside 12 hours, full chemical cure at 72. Pool decks reopened after 72-hour window.
Common Questions
Exterior-specific questions.
Will this yellow in full sun exposure?
No. The topcoat is aliphatic polyaspartic — the chemistry specifically engineered to resist UV-induced yellowing. Cheap outdoor sealers use aromatic resins that yellow within six to twelve months. Our systems hold color for ten-plus years of direct Carolina sun. This is the single most important spec decision for any exterior coating.
Is it safe for bare feet around a pool?
Yes — the anti-slip aggregate is sized for barefoot comfort. It’s textured enough to hold slip-resistance ratings in wet conditions, soft enough not to scrape skin. For pool decks we typically specify a fine silica broadcast rather than aluminum oxide, which reads smoother underfoot while still meeting ANSI B101.3 safe thresholds. Schedule a pool-deck walk and we’ll show a sample.
How does it handle pool chlorine and spa salt?
Polyaspartic is chemical-rated for chlorinated water, saline spa systems, and pool-deck cleaning chemistry. It won’t strip, cloud, or delaminate from normal pool water splash or salt system residue. Routine maintenance is a mild-detergent wash — the same care routine any pool deck needs.
Can you coat a stamped-concrete patio that’s losing its color?
Yes, and this is one of our most common outdoor jobs. Faded stamped concrete is ground lightly to remove the failed sealer, then primed and coated with a pigmented system that preserves the stamped texture visually while adding a ten-year wear layer. It’s typically less than half the cost of replacing the patio. See examples on our gallery.
Does freeze-thaw crack the coating?
The polyaspartic resin we use has controlled flex formulated for exterior slab movement. Control joints are preserved — we never coat across a structural joint — so the slab can expand and contract seasonally without tearing the finish. This is why outdoor systems require a different spec than garage floors: the rigidity that makes a garage floor bulletproof would fail outdoors.
Do you service outdoor projects outside Charlotte?
Yes — the full Charlotte metro including Lake Norman, Fort Mill, Waxhaw, Weddington, and the Cornelius/Davidson corridor. Lake-house pool decks and outdoor kitchens are a regular part of our schedule. Call (704) 775-1120 or see our service area map.
